Geothermal power is the energy that we can get from the latent heat in the earth. It is a form of renewable energy which can be used on a large scale with a geothermal power plant, or on a small scale to provide heat for a single property, with a ground source heat pump.
There are many other sorts of renewable energy of course, including solar energy, wind power, hydropower and biomass energy. They are all useful, and can be used best in different locations. Some can easily be used for your own home, for example solar panels are very good at this, and there are other forms which generally have to be on a larger scale, for example hydropower.
The earth is a great source of energy because it always has some warmth to it, and that is the geothermal energy that it contains. In order to make use of this there has to be some way of extracting that heat and taking it to a useful location. In order to do that, we have to use a substance which can be taken beneath the ground, warmed and then brought back up. Water is not good at this because it will only be slightly warmed, so the difference would not be enough.
Instead what has to be used is a refrigerant, as this has a low boiling point. That means that it can be taken beneath the earth through pipes, where it will be warmed enough that it is ready to boil, and can be compressed into gas to increase its temperature. This can be done in the home with a ground source heat pump, and the heated refrigerant can be pumped around the house, warming the rooms as it goes.
